City Park Players returns to stage with uproarious comedy “Unnecessary Farce”

City Park Players is thrilled to return to Hearn Stage this summer with Paul Slade Smith’s slapstick comedy Unnecessary Farce.

Directed by Jim Weinzettle and Maura Herboldsheimer, this comedy opens Thursday, July 29 on Hearn Stage and features local talent -John Dunn, Maura Herboldsheimer, Caroline Randall, Carolyn Smilie, Jim Smilie, Don Stewart, and Rick Taylor.

ABOUT THE PLAY:  In a cheap motel room, an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next-door, two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape. But there's some confusion as to who's in which room, who's being videotaped, who's taken the money, who's hired a hit man, and why the accountant keeps taking off her clothes. Unnecessary Farce is a nonsensical comedy about a sting operation gone awry.  Two inept cops, three crooks, a zany mayor, a hopeless guard, two hotel rooms and eight doors result in uproarious laughs.

Unnecessary Farce performances continue July 29-August 8 - Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30pm; Sundays at 2:30pm on Hearn Stage in Downtown Alexandria.  Tickets range from $5-15, and are on sale now at and will be available 30 minutes before each performance in the lobby of Kress theatre.
